Social Security Benefits From an Ex? More Likely Than You Think
Did you know that you can claim Social Security benefits based on your ex-spouse’s income? That is, if your marriage lasted at least ten years, and there are different benefit rates based on if your ex is still alive or passed away. If they are currently living, you can claim divorced spousal benefits, which will be 50% of what your ex will get at full retirement age. If they have passed away, you instead qualify for divorced survivor benefits, which can go for up to 100% of what your ex earned. However, keep in mind that you need to be at least 62 years old to apply for divorced spousal benefits, and 60 years old for divorced survivor benefits.
