Audio version available here (1 min. 40 sec.)
Those affected by Hurricane Beryl last week now have the opportunity to receive assistance from FEMA. Help can be provided for “serious needs, displacement, temporary lodging, basic home repair costs, personal property loss or other disaster-caused needs”.
The aid will be available for residents of counties in and around the path of the hurricane. The counties included are Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Jackson, Jasper, Jefferson, Liberty, Matagorda, Montgomery, Nacogdoches, Orange, Polk, San Jacinto, Walker and Wharton counties. It doesn’t matter if you own or rent the property affected by the storm. If you previously applied for FEMA aid due to natural disasters earlier this year like the May Derecho, you are still able to separately apply for assistance relating to Hurricane Beryl.
What can FEMA Assistance provide you? You can apply for a Serious Needs Assistance payment, a one-time $750 payment per household to buy essential items like water, food, first aid, hygiene products, baby formula, prescription medicine, and more. You can also apply for Displacement Assistance, which can help pay for immediate temporary housing if your home is currently not suitable for living. Other help you may receive is support for home repair costs that are not covered by insurance and you cannot regularly afford, help for self-employed individuals whose tools were damaged by the storm, home accessibility support for the disabled, and help for people whose computers were damaged by the storm.
To apply, you can go to disasterassistance.gov or download the FEMA app. You can also call the FEMA helpline at 800-621-3362. You may also visit a Disaster Recovery Center. Locations can be found at fema.gov/drc. For more information, please visit the FEMA resources we have linked below.
