How to Ask For Penalty Relief When You Miss a Tax Deadline
If you have missed a tax payment deadline, there are ways to get out of trouble with the IRS and avoid paying a penalty. First, you need to pay your taxes as quickly as possible. The longer you take to pay, the higher the potential penalty. When you receive your penalty letter, call the IRS and explain what type of penalty it is (you can usually find the answer on your IRS letter). You will then need to provide explanations on WHY you have missed the payment deadline. If you are unable to get the penalty waived or reduced over the phone, fill out and submit Form 843, Claim for Refund and Request for Abatement. Following these steps should increase your chances at receiving penalty relief from the IRS.
